The Undoing: Where'd you get that jacket

WARNING: SPOILERS & SHITTY OBSERVATIONS

The Undoing is a new show on HBO about rich people and a mysterious murder. I haven't watched a show this addictive in a while. Truthfully, I haven't really had time to watch any shows in the past couple months, not because I'm busy (HAHAHA) but because, the house we're currently renting is not set up to adequately watch TV shows during nap times or bed times. The TV in the living room is too close to Jack's room and the TV in our bedroom is too close to Ace's room. So anytime I attempt to watch a show, I take a huge risk in waking up one or the other. And before The Undoing, I couldn't find a show worth the risk. I watched about 15 minutes of The Queen's Gambit on Netflix before asking myself "am I really wasting precious minutes of alone time watching some old timey shit about the most boring game in the world??????" So, I've been reading a lot and keeping up with this wildly successful blog.

But a few nights ago, I started the first episode and was hooked immediately. (If you're wondering, I watched it mostly in our bedroom, taking the calculated risk of waking up Ace because he is less mobile.) If you haven't watched this show yet, I'd recommend putting this hot blog down, tucking in your asshole kids, and curling up to watch some good old fashioned murder. Or reading this first, I don't care how you live.

1) The Crazy Girl

The first 20 minutes, I already guessed that Elena & Jonathan were having an affair and that we was going to murder her. Although I would change my mind a few times over the next 6ish hours- it turns out I WAS FUCKING RIGHT. Maybe I should work for the FBI. John had already finished the series a couple days before, so I told him my initial suspicions that Elena would turn up dead and he said "Who?" I was like "The girl with short hair who is always flashing her tits?" He was like "OHH that Elena". I hadn't even seen Elena & Jonathan in the same room together yet, but I knew he was fucking her by the way she was creepily watching Grace. She had that crazy look in her eyes, that I recognized all too well. A look I can physically feel on my face, while I stare at ex's exes or ex's current partners or exes of my ex's exes or John's exes or John's exes' husbands' exes.

"Sure, you're pretty. BUT are you funny...?"

Once I figured out the affair side, I knew that British playboy Jonathan murdered her. And you know what, I don't blame him. Not really. Elena did seem weirdly obsessed and honestly what kind of mother is thinking about raw dogging their kid's oncologist during cancer treatment??? For me, that was the biggest mystery of the entire show.

2) The Jackets

I was constantly muttering out loud, "Look at that fucking coat". One time John heard me and he's like "Yeah, it's a TV show. People don't really dress like that". I was in shock. "They're fucking millionaires, of course they dress like that". He said "No way! If you were a millionaire, you'd still up show up places wearing leggings." I said "Excuse me, but if I was a millionaire I would for sure be showing up to school drop offs in a floor length fur coat with high heels and a perfect burgundy manicure." I can't believe he thinks millionaires walk around Manhattan in leggings and crocs. Just when you think you know someone, you find out they know nothing about fashion-or are perhaps harboring a secret affair and love child!

While binge watching this show, I was also simultaneously online shopping for colorful pea coats and creamy blouses. I was searching for the perfect burgundy nail polish and velvet green jackets. I added about $300 worth of leather skirts to my cart before realizing John's right and I do only wear leggings. But just wait until we become millionaires. Just. You. Wait.

3) The Cast

I haven't seen Hugh Grant in a new film in like 15 years and I was surprised at how he is a surprisingly good actor? I guess in my mind he is frozen in time as the prime minister in Love Actually. Maybe he has always been a decent actor, but I feel like his haggard wrinkles helped his acting, if that makes sense. Nicole Kidman on the other hand, has not aged AT ALL and that was distracting to me. She is 53 goddamn years old- why can't she have wrinkles? I also just really love Lily Rabe who played Sylvia, ever since she was that Stevie-Nicks-loving-witch on AHS. Very relatable.

4) Who Done It

Like I said before, I solved this case within in 20 minutes. Easy open and shut case, sarg. But each episode had me doubting my initial guess, and that was what kept me tuned in. I started to believe Jonathan, that crazy British son of a bitch! I became suspicious of Sylvia, in her immaculate cream colored coats! I started theorizing that Grace was some sort of manic schizophrenic, since she was having all these weird fantasies and fainting everywhere and flashbacking on Elena's tits all the time. But maybe that's just what rich white ladies do all day, I don't know! I thought they'd try to play it off that she blacked out in a fit of rage and murdered Elena but couldn't remember it. Then I started guessing Grace's dad did it! Anybody but Jonathan! (But I never suspected Henry, that sweet violin playing cherub. That was a bit of a stretch)

I was kind of disappointed in the ending. When all of a sudden we find out that WHOOPSIES, Jonathan actually killed his 4 year old sister and nobody bothered to tell Grace. Then he goes off the rails, manically laughing the whole time, and kidnaps his son to go to... Canada? I guess I would've preferred if Sylvia did it.

I feel like HBO will probably drag this out for a second season somehow. Grace and Detective Joe will probably bang. It will probably come out that Jonathan also had an affair with Sylvia. Grace's dad will probably have a heart attack. Henry will be struggling with puberty and having a murder-y dad. Everybody will be wearing great coats and yours truly will be tuning in.
